Vision

Naz’s vision is to create a just
and equitable society by
transforming individuals from
socially and economically
excluded communities into
agents of change.

Mission

To Build Vibrant Ecosystems That:

Energize and enable individuals from excluded communities to realize their potential and act as change makers/agents of change.
Expand partnerships, networks and linkages to catalyze a critical mass of such leaders.
Engage and influence governments, businesses and other stakeholders to take this movement at scale.
Our History
The Naz foundation (india) trust (Naz) established in 1994 by Anjali Gopalan, started its work with addressing issues of hiv/aids and sexuality.

Over the years, Naz has conducted thousands of sessions to help individuals and community based organisations understand sexuality and mainstream HIV in their programmes. Naz has worked to strengthen the care and support services provided to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) as well as counselling and referral for the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2001, it set up one of the first homes for orphan children living with HIV/AIDS in Delhi.

With a focus on advocacy, Naz successfully challenged the archaic law under the Indian penal code under Sec 377 which criminalised homosexuality.

The years of intense HIV prevention work made Naz clear that adolescent girls and young women were among the most vulnerable to be infected with HIV. Therefore, in 2006, Naz piloted an adolescent girls and young women’s empowerment programme using sport and life skills to empower adolescent girls from economically marginalised communities. Over the years, Naz has consolidated its work in the thematic areas of health (HIV and sexuality), gender and rights.

OUR
VALUES
  • Inclusion
  • Integrity
  • Commitment
  • Excellence
Naz now & in the future

With its experience and position in the field, Naz is well positioned to be a catalyst towards a world where equality and social justice will be accessible to all. Naz provides high quality, inclusive solutions for complex issues that can be implemented at scale. By creating and delivering high quality programmes, ecosystems and safe spaces, Naz enables economically and socially marginalised youth to realize their potential and become agents of change.

Naz will continue its work with Children Living with HIV as well as the LGBTQIA+ community providing care and support and enabling individuals from the communities to access their rights.

Naz will grow its adolescent girls and young women’s leadership programme that has reached out to more than 115,000 young people. It has established itself as a thought leader and centre of excellence regarding the use of sport as a tool for social change. It focusses on participation, building female leadership and safeguarding of children in sport.

Naz will evolve and expand its partnership programme and build the capacity of organisations to use various tools for social change in new and innovative ways to build an ecosystem for young people’s empowerment.

Naz will build on its experience and learnings to continue to advocate on issues regarding Health, Gender and Rights.

Naz will continue to respond to social problems in its thematic areas with a rights-based approach while at the same time providing services. It will continue to combine its quest to design and implement quality programmes which are impactful and at the same time replicable and scalable. Naz will remain to be innovative and in the forefront to collaborate and create partnerships.

“Naz is unique because there is huge respect for Diversity. You are not judged because of your gender, caste, religion, sexuality, your physical appearance, marital status etc. You can BE WHO YOU ARE at Naz.
