LGBTQIA+
INITIATIVE

NAZ ADVOCATES FOR DIVERSITY AND
INCLUSION AND A GREATER UNDERSTANDING
OF SEXUALITY AND EMPOWERS MEMBERS FROM
THE COMMUNITY TO ACCESS THEIR RIGHTS.

Naz is committed to provide counseling, care and support services to the LGBTQIA+ community. It supports individuals to access their rights such as medical services, face-to-face and telephonic counselling and referral services. They can access the helpline to seek support on understanding their sexuality, coming out with their identity, relationship issues, safe sex practices, testing for HIV and addressing issues of discrimination. Naz also offers counselling support and home-based care to the families of the community members.

Naz started its work with the LGBTQIA community from its foundation in 1994. Then with the Milan Project, 2004-2008, Naz launched India’s first programme focusing on working with transgenders and homosexual men. Safe sex education, training programs, and interventions were all provided by Naz. The Milan Project was the winner of many awards, including the MTV Staying Alive Foundation Award for 2006 and 2007.

Naz plans to have a safe place, a community centre to provide them services and opportunities.. This would go a long way in addressing issues like mental health, discrimination, abuse and create opportunities for mainstreaming them by providing hard and soft skills, aspirational mindsets as well as empowering career and entrepreneurship pathways to success.

“Individuals reach out to the helpline in desperation! Many think they are ‘abnormal’ as they are attracted to men. They want some ‘magic potion’ to make them normal. Some are contemplating suicide and many face huge emotional issues due to stigma and lack of acceptance. The helpline is able to help these individuals understand and accept their sexuality, to plan for coming out with their sexuality to their dear ones and becoming strong to live a life with pride and without fear.” SARABJEET SINGH
